Thankfulness Tablecloth

Last year was the first year that my husband and I hosted Thanksgiving. We decided that we wanted to institute a special Thanksgiving tradition, but we were having trouble figuring out what it should be. Andrew mentioned this to some friends and one of them shared a tradition that she and her family have been doing for many years...a thankfulness tablecloth. When we heard this idea we knew it was perfect (Thanks Sue!).

The thankfulness tablecloth is a tablecloth that you use every year on Thanksgiving. Each year the members of your family write what they are thankful for on the cloth and sign their name and date it. Over time it ends up being a wonderful reminder of God's blessings and faithfulness to your family.

Thanksgiving 2010, spent with my side of the family (my dad is behind the camera), squeezed into our tiny "dining room" where we enjoyed dinner on two card tables that we pushed together...sweet memories!
Notice the marker at the far end of the table in preparation for the first tablecloth signing!
You can use any type of tablecloth that you'd like, but it will work best if the cloth is light in color and is either solid or has very little pattern to it. I stitched ours up using some home decor weight fabric that I purchased, but you could just as easily use a store bought cloth. I believe that our friend's family uses a plastic coated tablecloth, which is probably a bit easier to write on than ours (we put a magazine under our cloth when we sign it so that the permanent marker doesn't bleed onto the table). As an alternative, you could use solid colored placemats for each member of your family and each person could record what they are thankful for onto their own placemat every year.

We started our tablecloth last year and I'm really excited to add to it again this year. Can you imagine how amazing it will be 20 years from now to pull out the tablecloth and be reminded of all of the things we've had to be thankful for over the past 20 years?! What a special family heirloom!
